Get a permit before you build

Anyone who wants to build, extend, alter or demolish a structure in Old Tafo needs a building permit from the Assembly before work starts. The permit confirms that your plans meet planning, safety and building regulations.

Building without a permit is an offence. Unauthorised structures can be stopped, attract penalties or be demolished.

How to apply

  1. Collect an application form

Get the building permit application form from the Physical Planning Department of the Assembly.

  2. Prepare your drawings and documents

Have your drawings prepared by a qualified professional and gather the documents listed under "What you need".

  3. Submit your application

Return the completed form with all documents to the Physical Planning Department and pay the processing fee.

  4. Site inspection and review

Officers inspect the site, and your application is reviewed by the technical committee against planning and building regulations.

  5. Decision and permit fee

If your application is approved, pay the permit fee and collect your building permit before any work begins.

What you need

  • Completed building permit application form
  • Site plan prepared by a licensed surveyor
  • Architectural drawings of the proposed building
  • Structural drawings, for storey buildings and large structures
  • Proof of land ownership, such as an indenture or land title certificate
  • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) permit, where the development requires one
  • Fire safety approval from the Ghana National Fire Service, for commercial and public buildings

Not sure what your project needs?

Requirements depend on the size and use of the building. Speak to the Physical Planning Department before you prepare your drawings to avoid delays.
