Works Department

The Works Department plans, builds and maintains the Assembly's public infrastructure, from roads and drains to markets and public buildings. It brings together several former departments and units under one office.

What we do

The department's main responsibilities to the Assembly and the public.

  • Implement policies on works, report to the Assembly, and advise it on all works-related matters.
  • Facilitate the construction, repair and maintenance of:
    • Public roads, including feeder roads
    • Drains along streets in the major settlements of the municipality
  • Encourage and facilitate the maintenance of public buildings and facilities.
  • Help build, equip, close and maintain markets, and prevent stores being put up outside market areas.
  • Inspect projects undertaken by the Assembly, together with the relevant departments.
  • Advise the Assembly on prohibiting borrow pits and other excavations, and on the sinking and closure of wells.
  • Maintain public buildings, including offices, residential accommodation and ancillary structures.
  • Advise and encourage building owners to:
    • Remove dilapidated structures from public places
    • Paint or wash the outside of buildings on their premises
    • Tidy their premises and remove derelict vehicles or objects that cause a nuisance
  • Give technical advice on building plans for fire escape, rescue operations and fire management.
