What we do

The department's main responsibilities to the Assembly and the public.

• Prepare physical plans that guide development policies, decisions and project design within the Assembly.
• Coordinate the projects of departments, agencies and non-governmental organisations to ensure they meet planning standards.
• Advise on setting out approved plans for the future development of land in the municipality.
• Provide layouts for improved housing and settlements, and advise on conditions for building public and private structures.
• Ensure no new building is constructed unless its building plans have been approved by the Assembly.
• Advise on demolishing dilapidated buildings and recovering the costs involved.
• Advise the Assembly on siting billboards and masts, and ensure its decisions are followed.
• Advise on acquiring land in the public interest, and manage street naming, house numbering and related matters.
